Students must demonstrate intermediate college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. In addition, successful completion of at least two quarters of college-level studies spanning multiple disciplines is a prerequisite for admission. This could be satisfied by interdisciplinary programs at Evergreen or classes at Evergreen or elsewhere that demonstrate breadth of subject matter. Students must submit an application demonstrating that they have fulfilled the prerequisites. Previous experience in media production is not required.

What does it mean to make media in this age of media proliferation and saturation? As media artists, how can we participate in public discourse and give voice to marginalized perspectives? How can we critically engage traditions of media practice and push beyond established forms? Images pervade commodity culture; how can we repurpose them to communicate our own meanings and values? How might we use media to respond to social and environmental crises and support struggles for change? What responsibilities do we have to our audiences and to the individuals who are the subjects of our work? How have other media artists addressed these questions?

In this intensive, yearlong program students will engage with these questions as they cultivate their voices in media. Focusing on the broad category of nonfiction, students will sharpen essential skills of observation, research, collaboration, reading and writing, design and production, critique and reflection. They will experiment with autobiography, documentary, cine-poems, soundscapes and audio-visual essays, gaining technical skills, producing short works in animation, live-action, and audio, and weaving a media practice from a wealth of philosophical, cultural, historical, and material perspectives. Students will explore strategies that artists employ to challenge commercial and mainstream forms and stereotypes, and will collaborate to develop fluency in media analysis and criticism. In critique sessions, another form of collaboration, students will learn to evaluate and give constructive feedback to each other.

In fall students will investigate media’s capacity to observe and record the world, and how viewers interpret and make meaning from that. They will engage in field observation, critical analysis, and research, and experiment with representing their observations in 16mm film, video, animation, and audio. Class sessions will include lectures, screenings, conceptual and technical workshops, seminar, and critique. Students will engage in substantial reading and writing as they learn to analyze how different practitioners use media to frame events and experiences, perpetuate or question ideologies, and influence viewers. They will investigate the commodification of images, how images and sound work together, how to use them to create and contest meaning in art, politics, and consumer culture; to represent identity and respond to social and environmental crises.

In winter students will apply their practice of media to community collaboration. Working in cohorts to create animation and digital video produced in the CCAM, Evergreen's high-definition studio, they will make pieces that support the goals of specific community groups. They will learn about traditional and experimental approaches to community engagement, and further explore forms of live-action and animated nonfiction. Looking toward spring, as a culmination of their learning students will research and draft an extensive proposal for a self-directed, nonfiction media project to complete and exhibit at the end of the year. Projects may take a number of forms, including film, video, animation, audio, installation, performance, and internship. Collaborative projects are welcome. In spring students will focus intensively on these projects, strengthening time management and organizational skills and attending weekly critiques, visiting-artist presentations, screenings, and technical workshops that support their emerging work.

Internship Opportunities

In spring quarter, students may choose to do an internship in a local or regional organization focusing on media production, media education, or a related subject. Students must complete an in-program Internship Learning Contract in consultation with the faculty and Academic Advising by the end of winter quarter.
