This course is designed to be the first half of the equivalent of a year-long study of general chemistry and will include lecture, small-group problem-solving activities, and laboratory. The class will begin by learning the structure of the atom. This knowledge will then be applied to understand why atoms combine the way they do to form various substances and also to explain why different substances have different chemical properties. Additional topics covered will include stoichiometry, aqueous solutions, thermochemistry, and gases. Laboratory will focus on developing good lab habits and skills while applying the principles learned in class to real-world problems.
