This course will provide an introduction to jazz music, an overview of its history and styles, and an assessment of its impact on American culture. Students will explore the musical elements of jazz; its aesthetic, cultural, and historical roots; its evolution through a variety of styles, including New Orleans, Swing, Bebop, Cool, and Avant-Garde; and the ways in which the music, its players, and its history have helped shape American culture. The final project will involve the close reading of a single jazz album. Students interested in expanding their final projects into a major piece of music writing can develop individual learning contracts for additional credit during second session.
