Writer's Workshop

Note: This 12-credit program will meet from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on five Saturdays each quarter (winter: Jan. 9, 23, Feb. 6, 20, and Mar. 6.; spring: TBA). First class meets in SEM 2 B3105.

This is a two-quarter writing program in which students will concentrate on both non-fiction and fiction. Throughout Writer's Workshop, we will build on our knowledge of what makes good writing and how to employ literary techniques that help us to write vibrantly. During winter, we will emphasize memoir, literary or investigative journalism, personal essay, and non-fiction story writing. During spring, we will concentrate primarily on short story writing and/or novel writing, creative non-fiction, and some forms of poetry.

Through both extensive reading and writing, we will study the architecture of good writing. Students will focus on narrative voice, character, scene, plot, movement, and cohesion. Most importantly, we will focus on nurturing ourselves as creative writers seeking to create a disciplined structure that sustains our work. Students will gain significant skills in critical reading and peer editing. Structured, peer critique group time will be an integral part of the program. Smaller writing assignments will be experiential and assigned. Larger writing assignments will be designed and structured by the student with approval by the faculty. The faculty member will provide extensive feedback and will also expect students to widen their circle of critics by using the Writing Center, peer feedback, and other outside entities.

This program will help students to gain useful skills for several key career areas. Strong writing and communication skills are an integral part of a vibrant and practical liberal arts education and will be beneficial to any career. Credits will be awarded in such areas as literature, expository writing, and creative writing. Excellent attendance and full, diligent participation in all activities required for full credit.
