Note: This 8-credit program will meet from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. First class will meet in SEM 2 A1105.
This rigorous two-quarter program will explore the visual culture and ceremonial traditions of Mexico. In fall quarter we will study the Mexican pre-Columbian and colonial eras. We will take a thematic approach to this challenging topic, studying native Mesoamerican art and spirituality, Aztec poetry, colonial artistic traditions, the Day of the Dead, masking traditions, and the Virgin of Guadalupe. During winter quarter we will learn about the post-revolutionary mural movement, women painters like Frida Kahlo, social protest art of the People's Graphic Art Workshop, vibrant folk traditions that accompany the fiestas, and contemporary Mexican and Chicano art. We will also focus on the position of women during these eras. Relevant art projects will be incorporated so that students can learn about Mexican art history in an experiential way. Credit will be awarded in Mexican art history. Other credit options include multicultural studies and/or women's studies.

Special Expenses: $25-35 for art supplies and museum entrance fees
