Team Opens Season With 3-2 Win
August 16, 2008
Olympia, WA - Geoduck newcomers shine in team's season opener as Evergreen State defeated Doane College (Nebraska) 3-2. Talented transfer Brittany Cino (Jr. Granite Bay, Calif.) and nearby Shelton High School grad Michelle Robinson (Fr) scored a goal each to add to veteran Kate Green's (Sr. Kentwood HS) single goal.
Evergreen was on the board first, scoring two goals in the first 12 minutes of play. Cino took advantage of a Tiger foul, as she secured the loose ball following Green's indirect kick at 6 minutes. Green was given the assist on the play.
Five minutes later Green knocked in one of her own with an assist from Hannah Ettengoff (So, Evergreen HS / Vancouver, WA). Doane came within one in the first half when Terriane Colangelo (Ontario, Canada) snuck past defenders to score from 30 feet out.
The Geoducks held the advantage in shots on goal during the game, totaling 10 for the match as the Tigers managed just 3.
In the second half Evergreen scored first when a persistent Robinson shot, then followed her own rebound to punch in the net.
The Tigers had a mid-period surge to put Evergreen on the defensive. With 13 minutes remaining Jayne Wagner (Ft. Collins, Colo.) dribbled around ESC defenders to put her team within one point.
Regrouping, ESC had a series of shots that were saved or just off target to keep the pressure on Doane the remainder of the game.
It's the first season opener win for Evergreen since 2005.
Evergreen will return to action on 4 PM Monday at home. They will host Northwest University from Kirkland in a Cascade Conference game.
