Evergreen drops opener against UBC

August 17, 2006

Olympia, WA - Sophomore defender Jill Kinsman scored twice in the first 11 minutes and the University of British Columbia went on to defeat The Evergreen State College, 0-6, in the Geoducks' non-conference openeron Thursday.

Evergreen, learning a new system under first-year coach Paolo Mottola and playing with nine freshmen and only three seniors on its 19-player roster, got a typically strong defensive game from goalkeeper Carly Stewart, who made five stellar saves, and defender Lena Ishii.

The Geoduck offense managed four shots on the UBC goal as opposed to 11 shots on goal for the Thunderbirds, who won the Canada West regular season championship a year ago at 12-1-3. In addition to Kinsman's two momentum-building goals, Chelsea Hampton scored twice, Amy Bobb and Bonnie Glover once for UBC.

Evergreen will have a week to fine-tune its new system before hosting Central Washington University in another non-conference game on Thursday, August 24.
