August 22, 2005 OLYMPIA, Wash.-- After their third consecutive appearance in post-season play and their best-ever conference record, the Evergreen women's soccer team open the 2005 soccer season ranked third in the Cascade Collegiate Conference pre-season polls. The Geoducks finished last year's conference race with an 8-2-1 mark, but lost in the first round of the conference tournament to this year's second- ranked team, Corban College. Evergreen returns senior forward Alisha White who led the team and the conference in goals and was named an Honorable Mention All-America. Other key returners are Kaylen Kelley who will move from forward to defender this fall, goalkeeper Carly Stewart who was tabbed as an All-conference goalkeeper in 2003, defenders Lena Ishii and Jamie Doran who were voted the team's top defenders last fall, and senior leader Elizabeth Lieberknecht who started 17 games in midfield for the Geoducks last fall. Evergreen lost to this year's top-rated team, Concordia University, 1-0 in Portland and tied the eventual NAIA National Tournament finalist 0-0 in Olympia. But the Geoducks add several players to the team who will help in the pursuit to topple the conference leader. Seattle University transfer, Kate Green, will add to the attack playing as both a forward and midfielder, while Lower Columbia College transfer Alice Fox-Dietz has been a very impressive forward during pre-season. The Geoducks are also very excited about the midfield play of freshmen Jenine Adam and April MacKay. Adam is a crafty, playmaker who can unlock defenses with her passing. Meanwhile, MacKay is a hard-hitting defender who has shown great vision and skill during the pre-season. Bolstering the defense will be freshman Marissa Major who displayed great speed, strength and skill in Evergreen's exhibition against Seattle Pacific University. The Geoducks open their season August 23rd against Morningside College from Sioux City Iowa. Kickoff is at 4:00 pm and will be followed by the men's game against Morningside at 6:00 pm.
