OLYMPIA, WA -- The Evergreen State College women's soccer team took a break from its hectic training and game schedule to participate in the annual Light The Night Walk. Light the Night is a fundraiser for the national Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and was organized in Olympia last year by Matt and Nancy Smith after they lost their son Kevin to Leukemia. The Geoducks also participated in last year's innagural walk.

"This was a great experience for me and for our team," said head coach Erik Gibson-Snyder. "We are really passionate about what we do on the field, but when you walk around the lake with these people who are struggling every day for the lives of their family members, it puts things in perspective. I have an eleven month old daughter and I can't comprehend what it would be like to lose her to cancer."

Cancer is an issue very close to the team as one player has a father who is currently undergoing chemotherapy, another player lost her mother to cancer, and a third left the team early in the season to be with her mother who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

After raising $19,000 in its first year, Light the Night raised $36,000 this year.

"It was nice to be able to contribute…even a little bit," said Gibson-Snyder. "They put on a great event. It is really one of those experiences when you get from it more than you could ever give."
