Evergreen Ties Pacific Lutheran in OT

September 3, 2004

Olympia, WA - The Evergreen State College women's soccer team hosted Pacific Lutheran University to kick off Evergreen's annual Arno Zoske Tournament. PLU (0-1) got off to a fast start with a goal off a cross at just over three minutes into the match. Nicole Roeder picked up the ball wide of the Evergreen goal and sent a cross to the middle of the field that floated over the arms of Evergreen goalkeeper Carly Stewart.

Evergreen responded with an attacking flurry that forced a PLU defender to save a shot off the goal line when Alisha White put a shot past Lute keeper Kim Bosley. Bosley would come up big a moment later as Evergreen's Kaylen Kelley turned the corner behind Pacific Lutheran's defense and slotted a ball to the onrushing Kimberly Force. Bosley slapped the ball forcing it to carom off the crossbar and out of play.

PLU got its second goal of the match off a corner kick. Jackie Oehmcke served a ball into the Geoduck box and Melissa Buitrago freed herself from her mark and powered a header into the goal at the far post.

Moments before half time Evergreen got themselves back into the game when Kelley again beat the PLU defense out wide and dribbled into the center of the field along the end line. Taking matters into her own hands, Kelley slipped a shot past a diving Bosley with four seconds left in the half.

Inspired, the Geoducks brought the game to the Lutes in the second half. Evergreen's midfield picked up its defensive intensity and challenged for every loose ball. The Geoducks committed 18 fouls in the second half doubling PLU's nine. Offensively, Evergreen began to string passes together in midfield and recorder nine shots and six corner kicks in the period and held PLU to seven shots and three corners.

As the Geoducks committed more and more players into the attack, PLU became dangerous on counterattacks. Three different times the Lutes had luck go against them as long range shots skipped off the crossbar and out of play.

Evergreen's pressure finally pain off when Kelley again victimized the Lutes defense. Defending deep in the PLU end, Kelley and Alisha White forced a turnover that Kelley picked up and put past a helpless Bosley with 2:19 remaining in the game.

Overtime began with the Geoducks again forcing the action into the PLU end. White and Kelley relentlessly attacked the PLU defenders ultimately gaining a penalty kick when White dribbled around a Lute defender and was tripped from behind. Freshman midfielder Maeve Dempsey stepped to the spot for the Geoducks but saw her shot saved by Bosley. Dempsey pounced on the rebound, but her follow up shot sailed over the goal leaving the game to end in a 2-2 deadlock.

Both teams have a second match of the weekend at Evergreen as PLU takes on Canada's Trinity Western University at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Evergreen with then finish the weekend against Trinity Western at 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
