OLYMPIA, WA -- It would appear that a good fall rain is exactly what The Evergreen State College Women's Soccer team needed to get a winning streak going in 2003.

With their backs to the wall, needing to win all four of their remaining games, in order to qualify for the Cascade Conference post-season tournament, the Geoducks (2-4-1 CCC, 3-9-2 Overall) stepped onto the field with a purpose and shutout the visiting Warner Pacific Knights (4-5-1 CCC, 4-9-1 Overall), 4-0, in the pouring rain.

Fourteen shots-on-goal resulted in four goals for four different players - Celeste Holtz-Schietinger (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community H.S.), Tiffany Fenster (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt H.S.), Katie Fraser (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington H.S.), and Lisa Leadon (Seattle, Wash./Garfield H.S.) - and four assist for three different players - Brekke Holub (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.), Leah Humphries (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak H.S.), and Elizabeth Liberknecht (Austin, Texas/Westlake H.S.). Fenster, who lead both teams with 10 shots, also recorded an assist with her goal.

Even with Campa De Quatro (Field 4), Evergreen's home soccer field, soaked from a day long rain, Evergreen came to play. Once they adjusted to the slippery conditions, shots began to fly and never ceased.

Warner Pacific's goalkeeper stopped twelve shots each period. On the other end of the field Evergreen's freshman keeper, Carly Stewart (Federal Way, Wash./Kennedy H.S.), was challenged only twice and in the end got her fourth shutout of the season.

Today's victory was only the second time this season Evergreen has scored two or more goals. The other occasion was a 2-0 victory over regionally ranked Rocky Mountain, Aug. 29.

It was also the second game in a row that Evergreen has taken 20 or more shots. Saturday (Oct. 11), they took thirty-one total shots and beat Oregon Tech 1-0.

With the win, Evergreen is still very much in the playoff hunt. But they do have to win all three of their remaining games and Albertson has to lose all three of their remaining games, a very feasible task.

Cascade College, Evergreen's opponent this Saturday
(Oct. 15), has not won a game this year. Eastern Oregon, next Friday's opponent, has only won one contest this season. Next Saturday (Oct. 15), Evergreen hosts Albertson.

Albertson's last home game is this Friday against regionally ranked (#4) Western Baptist, who leads the southern division of the Cascade Conference with a 7-2-0 record.
The following Friday (Oct. 24), the Yotes travel to Portland, Ore., to play northern division leader Concordia University (7-0-1), ranked #4 in the nation.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the second and final playoff spot from the northern division is decided on the campus of The Evergreen State College next Saturday (Oct. 25) between Evergreen and Albertson?
