August 29, 2003 by James J. Portune OLYMPIA, WA -- Twenty-two minutes into the season opener against visiting Rocky Mountain College head women's soccer coach Arlene McMahon had what she wanted, a goal from her two-time 1st Team All-Conference forward Tiffany Fenster (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt H.S.) and a 1-0 lead. Junior transfer Katie Frasier (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington H.S.) added an insurance goal in the 60th minute to give Evergreen (1-0) a 2-0 win over Rocky Mountain (0-1), ranked 4th in the NAIA Region I Pre-Season Poll. Freshman goalkeeper Carly Stewart (Federal Way, Wash./Kennedy H.S.) showed that she had every intentions of remaining Evergreen's starting goalie. With insight that is only gained through experience she choose wisely when to advance out of the goalkeepers box and expertly turned back all four of Rocky Mountains serious attempts to score. For her efforts she was rewarded with a shutout in her first college outing.Along with Fenster, Frasier and Stewart, junior midfielder Brekke Holub (Olympia, Wash./Horizon H.S.) was also a bright spot for the Geoducks in this game. Absent from the playing field all last season due to a knee injury, she proved to be a catalyst in controlling the midfield and initiating Evergreen's attack. The pass that enabled Fenster to score in the 1st half came from Holub.
Coach McMahon To have Holub step up and assume a leadership role so early in the season was key for Coach McMahan. With the absence of 1st Team All-Conference midfielder and NAIA All-American (Honorable Mention) A.J. Fairburn (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium H.S.), who is having to redshirting the 2003 season, the middle was an uncertainty for Evergreen in the season opener. Evergreen will next see action on Sunday (Aug. 31), day three of the 2003 Arno Zoske Soccer Tournament, against Pacific Lutheran University. The Lutes are coming off a 7-11-1 season in the NCAA Div. III Northwest Conference. The game will kick-off at 3:00 p.m. |
