Evergreen 6, Morningside (Iowa) 0
September 2, 2001
Olympia, WA - After facing two teams ranked in the NAIA Top-25 to open the season, the Evergreen women's soccer team eagerly anticipated the arrival of Morningside College, a second-year program. What ensued was a clinic in soccer, as the Geoducks outshot the visitors from Iowa 33-2 in a 6-0 victory on CRC Field No. 4.
After being shutout by both Seattle University and Simon Fraser, Evergreen (1-2) looked for redemption. Junior Bethany Roth (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional HS) scored two goals, while true freshman Tiffany Fenster (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt HS) also found the net twice, as the Geoducks scored the most goals in a game since a 6-0 whitewashing of Mills College in 1997.
"Although we didn't win our first two games, we got confidence playing against the high caliber opponents," said Evergreen assistant coach Luise Frank. "Hopefully, we will be able to build off this win for our games next week against Central Washington and Cascade."
Senior Janica Blasko (Anchorage, Alaska / So. Colorado) opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a 35-yard blast through Mustang keeper Fabiana Arroba off a direct kick. Roth made it 2-0 with a flick off a nice pass from Rachel Kempf (South Bend, ID/St. Joseph HS) in the 29th minute.
Fenster, a two-time All-KingCo selection at Roosevelt High, made the most of her home debut. She took a long ball from Jennifer Fahrney (Las Vegas, NV/ UNLV) and beat Arroba, and then took a feed from Fern Schultz (Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS) and chipped a ball from 25-yards out to close the scoring. "Tiffany was motivated at halftime to step up and score," Frank said.
Morningside (0-2), from Sioux City, Iowa, had only two scoring chances against Geoducks keeper Nora Moloney (Bainbridge Island, WA/Western Oregon). Bremerton native Janel Gillies had a one-on-one attempt in the 76th minute, but the senior made the save. It was Moloney's third career shutout and the Geoducks first at home since a 2-0 blanking of Western Baptist in 1998. "Nora responded well to the one-on-one attempt," said Frank. "With not much action during the game, it is great to see how she reacted on a moments notice."
The Geoducks return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Ellensburg to face Central Washington at 3 p.m.
