Coquitlam, B.C. - The defending NAIA National Championship Simon Fraser women's soccer team opened their 2001 campaign this afternoon with a solid performance, downing The Evergreen State College 5-0 at Town Centre Stadium.

SFU(1-0) controlled play throughout the game, making it difficult for the Geoducks to set anything up on the Clan side of the field. Alix Ius opened the scoring for the Clan in the 5th minute with a beautiful diving header on a cross from Naomi Eguchi. Eguchi then picked up her second assist as she crossed another one over to Jillian Stewart, who netted her first of the season in the 23rd minute to put the Clan up 2-0.

Simon Fraser had two more chance to score with the Evergreen keeper, Nora Moloney (Bainbridge Island, WA/Western Oregon) down on the ground, but the defense came back to help her out, making two team saves. Stewart netted another goal in the 40th minute on a lob pass from Leslie Gibbons to put the Clan up 3-0 heading into the half. SFU outshot the Geoducks 8-4 in the first half.

The Clan came out aggressive once again in the second stanza, as Gibbens scored her first SFU career goal just 18 seconds into the half, before adding her second in the 67t minute to make the final 5-0. The Clan outshot the Geoducks by a final of 17-7. Jeanette McKay picked up her first shutout of the season making two saves. Tiffany Fenster (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt HS) had three shots for the Geoducks.

The win improved Simon Fraser's record against Evergreen to 14-0 all-time. Evergreen returns home, Sunday morning at 10 a.m., to face Morningside College of Sioux City, Iowa.
