Geoducks defeat number four Warner Pacific

December 3, 2005

Olympia, WA - The Evergreen State College Geoducks came out once again Saturday night determined to beat the number four ranked Warner Pacific Knights. And with that determination they were able to defeat them in a close battle 57-56.

Coming into a game where Warner Pacific's senior, Angie Sun, scored 34 points the previous night, the Geoducks knew they had to be on their defensive game tonight. They were able to hold Sun to just 6 points in the first half, but let up in the second half where she put down 12 more points.

The first half, Evergreen was able to outshoot Warner Pacific from field goal range (44.0%-18.8%) and the three-point line (33.3%-10.0%), but they took their points where they could get them-the free throw line (46.2%-87.5%). The ladies hit the half way point Evergreen 29, Warner Pacific 27. Senior, Dalia Gomez, and sophomore, Danielle Keenan, lead the team with 9 points each and Gomez also grabbed 5 rebounds for the team high. Nicole Brown, Angie Sun and Amber Stevens all had the Knight's high at 6 points.

The second half the Geoducks continued with their intensity and were able to keep the lead until approximately eight minutes to go in the game. Even then, the Knights lead by only two and the lead was quickly lost. From there, the point differential didn't grow to more than 7 points.

At 2:06 on the clock, Warner Pacific began fouling to put the Geoducks on the line rather than have them put field goals in. The plan of attack worked. Evergreen had trouble from the line (shooting 53.3% for the game) and soon the game was tied at 56. With :07 to go, senior, Rachel Ross, was fouled and went to line where she made one of two attempts to make the game winning score 57-56, making the Geoducks 2-0 in conference play. The Knights hurried the ball down the court but were unable to produce any points.

Ross took the Geoduck's team high with 14 points and Gomez the high for rebounds at 8 while Sun at 16 points for Warner Pacific and Becky VanTine grabbed 10 rebounds for the game.

Evergreen State will take on the University of Puget Sound this Wednesday, December 7 at 6p.m. in Tacoma, WA.
