Geoducks Slip to Saints in Opener

November 5, 2004

Olympia, WA - The Geoduck women's basketball team dropped their first game of the season as they hosted cross-town rival Saint Martin's college tonight. The Saints jumped out to a 33-20 half time lead behind Olympia High School graduate Julia Eisentrout's eight points. Then Beth Layton took over leading Saint Martins with 13 second half points to put the game away 69-49.

Evergreen never settled into an offensive rhythm, in part due to some tenacious defending by the Saints. Evergreen struggled to get the ball inside against the taller Saint players and were forced to settle for longer-range shots, often under pressure. The Geoducks were led in scoring by Kamrica Ary-Turner with 15 points on the night. But Evergreen turned the ball over 25 times to help the Saints to some easy scores.

Evergreen got a strong defensive effort from Stephanie MacDuff who forced several Saints turnovers, but it was not enough to seriously threaten Saint Martins as they maintained a double digit lead for most of the night.

The Geoducks get the chance to climb to .500 as they host Westminster College Saturday at 5:30.
