Geoducks Hustle But Fall 3-0 to Saints

October 14, 2009

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Evergreen played a strong defensive game in tonight's match with St. Martin's University. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to get the Geoducks a win as attack errors worked against their favor.

Evergreen had a slow start in the match, trailing by as much as 9 points midway in game 1. Once the team slowed down their urgency to get the ball over the net they drew closer to the Saints relying on good defensive reactions to stop SMU attacks.

Saint Martin's was the dominant team in the hitting and serving categories. The Saints recorded 33 kills as a team to ESC's 19. The cross-town rivals also kept their players at the service line longer then the Geoducks, totalling 13 service aces to pad their score.

The Geoducks Evelyn Padayao (George Washington HS) the team in kills with 5 and a .308 success percentage and added 3 block assists. Meghan De La Rosa (Kennewick HS), the teams designated setter, totalled 12 assists.  LeAsia Jones (Oroville, CA) had a big blocking night with 3 blocks and 3 block assists.

Head coach Clay Blackwood noted the teams play, "I'm happy with the teams play tonight. They hustled. The mental mistakes are what cost us the match".

Teillissa Tua led the Saints with 9 kills adding 3 service aces and 3 block assists. Setter Cymbree Decosta contributed 21 assists, 3 service aces and 11 defensive digs.

Evergreen plays Friday night at home in a 7 PM match with Northwest University (6-14, 5-6 CCC), resuming conference play. The Geoducks are looking to snap their string of 10 losses.
