Fast Action Game Ends in 3-1 Loss for Geoducks Despite Strong Opening Set

Olympia, WA - Despite some strong early game play by the Geoducks, Corban's women's volleyball team defeated Evergreen 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16), Saturday inside the Green House.

Evergreen falls to 1-18, including 1-13 in conference action. The Warriors improve to 10-9 overall, including 8-6 in conference play.

In the opening set, the Geoducks had a great start. The team tallied a combined 18 kills with just two errors. Evergreen held the early lead after winning the first set 25-22.

The game went the other way in the second set with the Warriors scoring 20 combined kills versus eight hitting errors. Evergreen totaled just six kills to fall behind 25-22 with the teams tied in match play.

Evergreen had error problems in the third set, with their 9 kills effectiveness being reduced by 7 errors. Corban took the match lead with a score of 25-21.

Dominating the fourth and final set, the Warriors had their highest hitting percentage of the evening (.371) with 17 kills and only four errors. The Geoducks combined for 10 kills, including 4 by Kandice Gleaves, but could not balance that with hit erros as they fell behind by 9 points to lose the match 25-16.

Evergreen's kill total was shared by three Geoducks. Hailey Harris, Jessica DuBois, and Kandice Gleaves recorded 10 kills each, while setter Katie Huston finished with 40 assists to lead both teams.

Dig numbers were high on both teams as both teams hustled to keep the ball in play. Libero Ann Forman and Huston did well in their duty of guarding the back court with 22 and 20 digs respectively. Also playing well defensively, Mattie Blevens contributed four assist blocks.

For Corban, Senior Rachel Gowen registered a match high 14 kills. A pair of 12 kill performances from senior Rashelle Davenport and sophomore Teri Braun. Amy Thompson had 22 assists for the Warriors.

Evergreen is on the road this week with a Tuesday night game at Northwest University in Kirkland, WA at 7 PM.
