Two Home Losses for Geoducks
October 1, 2005
Olympia, WA - Losing three games in just over 60 minutes, The Evergreen State College Geoducks failed to come up with the win for the second night in a row, this time to visiting Southern Oregon.
The final match score of 11-30, 25-30, 22-30 won't help the Geoducks hold their heads any higher. Additional numbers like 48 kills on the part of the Raiders, versus 25 by Evergreen, don't help matters any either.
Dominated from Game 1, the Geoducks fell victim to Southern Oregon's fast-paced style and struggled to find their own rhythm against the Raiders. Nicholette Le Bell provided much of Southern Oregon's point total for the first game, scoring 10 to put the Raiders up 4-22. Le Bell also led the Raiders with 15 kills. She leads her team with 241 season kills. Southern Oregon is now 16-3, 8-1 in conference, with their only loss coming via Oregon Tech.
Evergreen threatened to make Game 2 interesting, coming within two points of the Raiders at 10-12. However, a kill by Shanna Claflin led to three Raider points to distance themselves further, eventually winning the game by five.
In the third and final game, the Geoducks found themselves tied with Southern Oregon six times, but failed to pull ahead by more than two on those golden opportunities. Following the tie score at 19, Evergreen tacked on a meager three points before Mia Wortel ended the match with a strong kill for the Raiders.
The Geoducks leading scorers were Elyse Johnston with seven kills, Mattie Blevens with six, and Chelsea Jacobson with four. Jacobson finished her night with an uncharacteristic low assist total of 17. Evergreen is now 2-7 overall and in league play.
The Geoducks return home to host Northwest College (15-1) on Monday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Later that week Eastern Oregon (4-5) and Albertson College (10-3) will face Evergreen for the second time in the season.
