Eastern Oregon Gets First Conference Win At Evergreen's Expense |

September 27, 2002 by James J. Portune OLYMPIA, WA -- Eastern Oregon University Women's Volleyball team learned that winning your first conference game, a month into the season, is not easy. Evergreen State Women's Volleyball team learned that winning three games in a row, an accomplishment never achieved in the two-year history of the program, is not easy. Tonight the victor was Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (1-4 CCC, 2-5 Overall) in four games (30-26, 30-22, 27-30, 30-28) over the Evergreen State Geoducks (1-5 CCC, 3-11 Overall). "There were too many peaks and valley in our game tonight," said Evergreen State assistant volleyball coach Donna Losey. "We had to play hard just to catch up." Coming off a lopsided win against Walla Walla the night before, the Geoducks started the night slow, allowing Eastern Oregon to jump to a 6-1 lead in the first match. Battling back to trail by only two, 12-10, Evergreen then proceeded to sink into an offensive hole and the Mountaineers capitalized with a 15 to 10 scoring run the lead to a 30-26 first game victory. Three players from each team recorded double-digit kills through four games. Evergreen senior Courtney Brandon (Pomeroy, Wa/Pomeroy H.S.) lead all players with 17 kills. Junior Stephanie Short (Spokane, Wa/Shadle Park H.S.) followed with 16 kills, with the third heavy hitter for the Geoducks being freshman Kristen Bartley (Lubbock, Tx/Monterey H.S.) with a total of 10 kills. Sophomore Kaki McLean lead Eastern Oregon with 13 kills, sophomore Erin Phelps came through with 11 and senior Mariah Dodrill found ten empty spots of the Evergreen side of the net. "We didn't play well tonight," remarked Eastern Oregon Ryan Platt, in his 1st year as head coach. "With five games on Wednesday night, we came in tired and lethargic."Game two was virtually a repeat of the previous game, with the Mountaineers jumping to a 7-0 lead. The Geoducks battled back to tie the game at 17 all, only to watch Eastern Oregon find another head of steam and run away with a 30-22 victory. In order for Evergreen to win game three momentum had to swing back to their side of the net and it would prove not be an easy process. Six times in the contest the score was deadlocked. Credit for the win has to go to freshman setter Hanna Plunk (Broomfield, Co/Broomfield H.S.). Her two service aces and two assists kept Evergreen alive to play in a fourth game, with a 30-27 win. Game four belonged to Evergreen from the open serve. That was through the first fifteen points. Eastern Oregon rallied, as the Geoduck offense suddenly went quiet, to take a 28-22 lead. If not for the new 30-point rally scoring system the game may easily have gone to Evergreen. Having rallied to within one point, 29-28, Evergreen regained the serve on a Tara Daly service error. But fortune shined on the Mountaineers tonight and a Evergreen service error gave Eastern Oregon the final point they need to go home a winner. The final game of Evergreen's back-to-back-to-back home stand will be Saturday evening against visiting Albertson College of Idaho. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Evergreen State College gymnasium. |
