Evergreen Rebounds, Wins In Three Straight Games |

October 26, 2002 by James J. Portune OLYMPIA, WA -- For the second time this season the Evergreen Women's Volleyball team learned from a previous night loss and walks over an opponent with ease. Lead by 13 kills from senior Courtney Brandon (Pomeroy, Wa/Pomeroy H.S.) and 10 kills from freshman Kristen Bartley (Lubbock, Tx/Monterey H.S.) Evergreen (5-18, 3-11 CCC) disposed of visiting Cascade College (5-16, 0-16 CCC) in three straight games (30-20, 30-26, 30-23). Last night against Warner Pacific the Geoducks were on track to win three consecutive game, something they have only accomplished twice so far this season. Confident in victory, they relaxed and Warner Pacific went on to win the next three games and left College Recreation Center still in the running for a playoff spot. 
Lash "Last night," explained Head Coach Bill Lash, "we pretty much eliminated ourselves from the playoffs. There is still a mathematical chance that we could earn a spot but in reality it is not very likely." With last night collapse fresh in their minds Evergreen stepped on the court for game 3 with as much determination and focus as they began game 1. Fifty-three serves later they headed to the sideline winners of their fifth game of the season, tying last season record. For the second night in a row the Geoducks were dominated at the net. Bartley and Brandon combined for nine of Evergreen's eleven total blocks. As a team, Cascade recorded only three total blocks. Statistically freshman Elyse Johnston (Elko, Nv/Elko H.S.) was the player-of-the-game. In fourteen attacks Johnston recorded eight kills with no errors. One service ace, eight defensive digs and one block rounded out her well played night. When asked what pre-game speech used to motivate his team, Coach Lash stated, "I told them this was their house. Bring your lunch pails out 'cause we have to go to work." Five games remain on 2002 schedule. Halloween night, Thursday, Oct 31, the Geoducks will be in Walla Walla to play the Warriors at 7:00 p.m. Two subsequent road games, on Nov 1st & 2nd against Eastern Oregon and Albertson, put Evergreen at home on Nov. 8 & 9th to play Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon. Both games can be heard live via the internet. "I am looking forward to the web streaming play-by-play," said Lash. "Parents who have not had been able to see their daughter play can at least hear them play this season. Modern technology is a wonderful tool." |
