October 5, 2001 OLYMPIA, WA -- The Evergreen State College got a breakthrough victory midway through its first season of intercollegiate competition, knocking off the Cascade Collegiate Conference's third place team, Western Baptist, in a five-set thriller Friday night at Evergreen. The Geoducks (4-7, 2-6) dropped the first game, 30-24, won the next two, 30-27 and 30-28, before dropping the fourth, 14-30, to set up a decisive fifth game. Evergreen took a quick 6-4 lead, only to see the Warriors (9-6, 5-3 and honorably mentioned in the national NAIA poll) tie it at 8-8, before Evergreen pulled away for a 15-11 final. Courtney Brandon (Pomeroy, Wash. / Walla Walla CC), the Geoducks 6-foot junior middle blocker, led the way with 18 kills and three solo blocks while 5-9 sophomore Stephanie Short (Spokane, Wash./ Spokane Falls CC) added 10 kills, several at crucial moments in the match. Freshman setter Hanna Plunk (Broomfield, Colo./ Broomfield HS) had 29 assists and 10 digs. Evergreen hosts the NAIA's eighth-ranked team, Cascade Conference leader Concordia University, Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. |
