Uhlig Hits NAIA Qualifying Mark at WWU Twilight

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Emily Uhlig (Sr. Liberty HS / Renton, WA) bettered the "B" qualifying standard for the NAIA National Track and Field Championships in a great night of Track and Field for Evergreen. At Western Washington University's Twilight Meet, Uhlig won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a personal best and school record time of 11:38.53.
The senior had a goal pace in mind, and with a lap to go, Uhlig used her consistent pacing to move into second place, then into the lead for a five second win. Uhlig defended her title at this race, winning the event at the 2007 edition of this meet.
Many personal bests and school records were set as weather cooperated on behalf of the athletes. In the women's 5000 meters, Ana Casillas (So, Bellarmine Prep) and Diann Leo (Jr. San Francisco, CA) hit bests of 19:11.43 and 21:22.59 for 3rd and 13th respectively.
In the sprints, Ryan Lara (Fr. Franklin Pierce HS) had a season's best in the 200 meters finishing 7th overall in a school record 23.14. Jason Shoemaker (Jr. Raymond HS) ran a personal best of 12.02 to place 21st.
5000 meter runners Brian Rakestraw (So, Woodinville HS) and Eric Jones (Jr. Columbia River HS) placed 9th and 17th respectively in a field of 36 runners. Rakestraw's time of 15:29.08 betters his own school record and Jones improved his best to 15:47.97.
Evergreen has next week off as they prepare for the upcoming Cascade Conference Track and Field Championships in Portland, OR May 8-10.
