Records set at Spring Break Open
March 31, 2007
EDMONDS, Wash. - Track and Field sent nine thinclads to the Spring Break Open Saturday. The low-key meet offers an opportunity for athletes not on vacation to sharpen their bodies for the more competitive meets ahead. The Geoducks managed to set some personal best, season best and even school record performances.
The men's 3000 meter run began the day for Evergreen. Brian Rakestraw boldly moved to the lead after the first lap and maintained that position until 3 laps remaining. He held on for 3rd place; 7 seconds off the winning time. His mark of 9:08.9 ranks 2nd on the schools all-time list for that event. Miguel Pineda finished 5th overall in a personal best of 9:19.2. Two other geoducks, James Hudson and Eric Jones, finished 9th and 10th respectively.
Donovan Montross, our lone field event competitor, tossed a personal best in the discus. His mark of 33.85m (111'-0") placed him 4th in the competition. Jason Shoemaker cut 100th's off his season's best in the 100 and 200 meter events. Running into a headwind, he clocked 12.6 and 25.5 in the respective dashes. Pineda doubled back in the 400 meters, placing 4th in 55.1. Kelsey Blair placed second in 1500 meters.
A school record was established in the women's 3000 meters by Emily Uhlig. Placing third overall, Uhlig's time of 11:07.7 breaks the nearly one year old record of 11:17.22 set by Rachel Williams. Uhlig will be setting her sights on breaking the school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the Willamette Invitational when the team travels to Salem, OR next Friday. She'll be joined in that event by teammate Blair who also ran in Saturday's 3000 meters, placing 7th.
In the longest race of the day, the 5000 meters, James Hudson and Jason McConnell placed 8th and 10th respectively. Hudson, who competed in the 3000 earlier in the day, ran 16:34 and McConnell set a personal best in the event of 16:37.
