Klimek wins first collegiate race, breaks own school record

Saturday, March 27, 2004

EDMONDS, WA -- Josh Klimek placed first and teammate Nathan Chambers placed 5th among collegians in today's 3000 meter race in Edmonds, WA. The sophomore duo stayed at the back of a pack of eight runners, being towed by eventual winner Uli Steidl, and looked comfortable passing the mile point in 4:48. With just over two laps to go, Josh gave chase with a big move to catch a group of four that had broken away in the seven and a half lap race. Chambers was nipping at his heels and worked his way into third place but couldn't match Klimek's surge to catch UBC's Shane Carlos. Klimek outsprinted Carlos in the last meters of the race to narrowly take the college victory.
Klimek's time of 8:58.0 broke his own Evergreen record set at the same meet last year by fifteen seconds.
