John Purtteman has been the head coach of men's soccer since the 2006 season after the role of assistant coach the previous two years. John took over the women's head position in 2007.
Purtteman is a graduate of the great Geoduck teams coached by Arno Zoske and he's proven himself in a decade of college coaching at South Puget Sound Community College.
Twice named Evergreen's MVP, Purtteman went on to play professionally for the Portland Pride, Seattle Seadogs, Florida Thundercats and Denver Thunder. He was twice named to the Continental Indoor Soccer League All-Star team.
Purtteman brought his professional playing experience into his coaching at SPSCC. Taking over a program that struggled to a record of 10-59-6 over the previous four seasons, Purtteman guided the Clippers to a 10-7-3 record in his first season. By 2003 the team was playoff-bound for the first time in school history, and in 2004 Purtteman led SPSCC to within a game of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship with a 15-5-3 record.
Since taking the head role for the Men's team, Purtteman helped the Geoducks to three top-five final standings in an ever more competitive Cascade Conference.
In addition to his work at Evergreen, Purtteman serves as coaching director of the South Sound Select youth program, coaches the Tacoma Stars Indoor Soccer Team and owns the Golden Goals residential soccer camp in Union, along Hood Canal.
Coach Purtteman and his wife Sonja live in Olympia with their son.
