3-3 Tie in Season Opener with UBC-Okanagan

September 1, 2009
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University, a strong NCAA Div II team, was able to capitalize on an own goal and some miscommunication by the Geoduck defense to account for two of their four points in their 4-1 win over Evergreen at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College.
The Vikings improved to 1-1-0 on the season. Evergreen, a NAIA affiliate, slipped to 0-1-1.
Western reached the scoreboard in the 25th minute on an Evergreen own goal, as a cross from the left by forward Tyler Bjork was turned in by the Geoducks' Kyle Foster.
Bjork then assisted on the second goal. His shot was saved by Evergreen goalkeeper Nathan Salvason, but Kenny Parker pounced on the rebound to finish from seven yards out.
Forward Gibson Bardsleypicked up the third goal in the 41st minute, stealing a backpass to the goalkeeper and getting a tap in, then midfielder Oscar Jimenez capped the charge in the 44th minute, scoring unassisted from 19 yards out off a corner kick.
Evergreen reached the scoreboard exactly two minutes into the second half as former Viking Mirza Memic powered in a free kick from just outside the top of the penalty area.
The Vikings had a 33-5 advantage in shots over the Geoducks.
Up next for Evergreen is a home conference game vs Northwest University on September 12th at 4 PM.
