Geoducks Put up a Good Fight in 1-0 Loss to Cavaliers
October 14, 2008
OLYMPIA, Wash. - Evergreen was able to hold Concordia University (Portland, Ore.) to just two shots on goal in today's game at The Evergreen State College but fell to the #1 Cavaliers 1-0. The Geoducks (3-5 CCC, 4-9) played an excellent defensive game that pushed back most attacks by Concordia (7-1 CCC, 10-4-1).
Both teams had some close opportunities to score in the first half, but more often then not shots were deflected by defenders and making the keepers day a bit easier.
Evergreen's Matt Curry nearly had a goal 30 minutes in but a nice save by CU's All-Conference goalie Garrett Staples ruined ESC's chance to tie the game.
A series of fouls called on Evergreen early in the second half led to the eventual game winning goal. An indirect kick was the result of the third foul. With the ball place at the midway point on ESC's side, Brian Iotte's penalty kick to the right side of the goal box found Jon Larsen open. Larsen found a hole in the defense and sent a hard kick past Evergreen keeper Nate Salveson, who dove just too late to get a hand on the ball.
The Geoducks executed a number of well planned attacks, but like their opponents, they had a difficult time finding clear shots.
A shot by Corey Johnson went just wide in the 73rd minute and started a run of Evergreen attacks for the next ten minutes.
Concordia had control of the ball the majority of the final minutes but were unable to add another goal to their tally.
Salveson and Staples had a draw in saves but Staples was given the nod with no goals against.
The Geoducks travel to Burnaby, British Columbia for a non-conference game with Simon Fraser University next Monday.
