Late game goal by Cascade results in close loss for Evergreen
October 21, 2006
Portland, OR - With both teams tied with five minutes left in the game, it was looking like the match would head into overtime. It's always a dangerous time for both teams in close soccer matches when any mistake can be taken advantage of. In this case, Cascade found the spirit to end the game in their favor.
Cascades Adalberto Angulo headed in a goal with 4 minutes to play to lift Cascade to a 2-1 conference victory over Evergreen today at a sunny Williams & Smith Field.
A wet field made play sloppy for much of the game. Players fought to control the ball and themselves on the soggy turf. The Thunderbirds scored first at the 42nd minute on a Chris West shot that nicked a defender's shoulder and found the back of the net.
Evergreen answered quickly with Alek Steffen scoring point blank just 30 seconds later. It was Steffens first goal of the season and his first as a college player.
The Geoducks made several good attempts to score in the second half, with T-Bird keeper Anthony Trejo covering Evergreen's shots well.
Angulo's game winner came after Cascade earned a corner kick at the 85th minutethat Kevin Youatt served into the box.
Evergreen falls to 3-7 in the Conference and 4-10-1 overall.
The team heads to Canada today to play Region I rival Simon Fraser. Evergreen beat Fraser early this season at the Arno Zoske Tournament.
