Geoducks lose to Eagles in final five minutes 0-1
September 19, 2006
OLYMPIA , Wash . Northwest University traveled to Olympia today to play against the men's soccer team. It was the first Cascade Conference game for both teams. It became a game that will be remembered by each team by the bruises on their shins following the physical game. Evergreen lost by a Northwest goal in the closing minutes.
It appeared that Evergreen had the game under control in the first period. They were patient passing the ball, they led the Eagles in shots and keeper Nick Tasche had little problem handling attempted shots by Northwest. Maybe it was the increasingly aggressive play by Northwest that eventually got into Evergreen's heads? Northwest had 7 fouls to Evergreen's 3 in the first period. The game went scoreless in the first half.
Several Northwest fouls in the early stages of the second period earned them three yellow cards to three players. Both teams grew frustrated with players down with lower leg injuries. Evergreen was beginning to feel the urgency of the clock and it showed in their play. Suddenly it was Evergreen drawing the fouls and yellow cards, with five players given warnings. Geoduck Johnathon Willoughby eventually was given a red card and ejected following a double yellow warning within the last ten minutes of the game.
Northwest's winning point came in the final three minutes of game play following a corner kick. Joe Buttle took the kick and aimed it in front of the Evergreen goal box. Trevor Uhler took advantage of his teammates placement and drove a low shot to the center of the net.
Evergreen tallied six shots and two shots on goal in the second period. Northwest had seven shots with with two shots on goal. Kyle Andrews led the team with three shots on goal.
The men's soccer team slips to 1-4-1 overall. Their next game is Friday September 22 nd at Albertson College of Idaho.
