September 9, 2005 OLYMPIA, Wash. -- After an impressive start against Morningside College of Sioux City, Iowa, The Evergreen State College men's soccer team stumbled in the opening game of the annual Arno Zoske Tournament this past weekend in Olympia. The Geoducks dismantled the 19th ranked team in the country when they downed Morningside 4-1 behind goals from four different first-year players. But a lethargic performance against area rival Pacific Lutheran University resulted in a 2-0 shutout of the potent Geoduck offense. Lute forward Mike Ferguson victimized the Geoduck defense twice in the game, the last goal coming in the waning minutes of the match after Evergreen was reduced to ten men after the ejection of starting goalkeeper Sean Oliver. Evergreen returned to form the following day against the University of British Columbia, grabbing a 2-0 win against a team who had tied Evergreen's conference rival, Concordia University, 1-1 the previous afternoon. Jordan Saxman struck first on a penalty kick set up by a nifty Trevor Jacka pass over the Thunderbird defense. Jacka got the second goal late in the game volleying home a cross from 15 yards. With the win, Evergreen climbs to 2-1 on the season and holds on to the number 14 spot in the nation in the year's second poll. Evergreen returns to the field today against Whitman College in an 11:00 match at The Evergreen State College, followed by a September 18th home game against NCAA Division II foe Western Washington University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. |
