Evergreen places third in Arno Zoske Tournament September 4, 2005 OLYMPIA, Wash. -- In their second game of the weekend The Evergreen State College men's soccer team grabbed a 2-0 win against the visiting University of British Columbia to claim third place in the Arno Zoske Tournament. Cascade Conference rival Concordia University took top honors with a win and a tie. Pacific Lutheran University and Evergreen both had 1-1 records on the weekend, but with a 2-0 win over Evergreen, PLU claimed second place. UBC finished last with a 0-1-1 record. Evergreen got on the board in the 24th minute of the contest when junior forward Trevor Jacka chipped a ball behind the defense to Jason Bjorgo. Bjorgo was dropped in the penalty area by an UBC defender and senior midfielder Jordon Saxman put a powerful penalty kick off the hands of a diving UBC goalkeeper Nikoli Matni and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Evergreen has earned at least one penalty kick in each of its games this season, but Saxman was the first to convert. Evergreen would have the chance to go up 2-0 on another penalty kick, but Saxman put his shot off the crossbar, keeping UBC in the game. Evergreen outshot UBC 17-12 on the day and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Geoduck defense made freshman goalkeeper Ryan Riley's first start in goal a relatively easy one. Riley recorded six saves on the day, all late in the second half as UBC pushed for the equalizer. Evergreen iced the game with a Trevor Jacka goal in the 84th minute. Greg Preciado pushed a ball wide to Jason Bjorgo who crossed back in to Jacka. The Geoduck forward punched a right-footed volley past the diving Matni from 15 yards. Evergreen moves to 2-1 on the year with the win. The Geoducks are back in action at home on September 10 th as they face Whitman College at 11:00 a.m. |
