September 3, 2005 OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Two second half goals by Lute sophomore forward Mike Ferguson propelled visiting Pacific Lutheran University past The Evergreen State College Geoducks in the opening game of the Arno Zoske tournament. The two teams joined in a slow dance for the first 45 minutes of the game, totaling a mere six shots and two corner kicks in the first stanza. Things looked like they might pick up for Evergreen early in the second half as the Lutes were called for a foul in their own penalty area. But Greg Preciado rapped the ensuing penalty kick off the crossbar to keep the score knotted at 0-0. Twenty minutes later Ferguson recorded his first strike of the match on an unassisted goal. With the Geoducks pressing to get back in the game and hold on to their #9 national ranking, goalkeeper Sean Oliver was shown a red card for foul language reducing the Geoducks to ten men and seriously damaging their hopes of a comeback in the final minutes. Their was a late goal in the game, but it was Ferguson again for the Lutes who scored it as he slipped behind the Evergreen defense and tapped home a sitter past back-up goalkeeper Ryan Riley. With the loss Evergreen moves to 1-1 on the season and has the opportunity to rebound tomorrow in their second game of the Arno Zoske Tournament as they face the University of British Columbia at 1:00 pm. Pacific Lutheran will take their win against Concordia University who drew with UBC today 1-1. PLU and Concordia kick off at 11:00 a.m.. |
