Geoducks score in final four seconds for win
September 10, 2005
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A goal in the final four seconds of the game gave The Evergreen State College men's soccer team a 1-0 win over NCAA Division III Whitman College today. The Geoducks had a number of quality scoring chances turned away by Whitman's freshman goalkeeper Brett Axlerod and it looked as though the game would need overtime to be decided.
But Evergreen got possession of the ball in its own end of the field with ten seconds remaining. Kyle Andrews found Nick Mancaruso on the right side of the field and Mancaruso crossed a ball to senior defender Luke Arthur. Arthur drilled a far-post header past Axlerod from ten yards to grab the win.
The goal was one of 19 shots the Geoducks took on the day.
Whitman recorded eight shots including a controversial Andy Huntington strike with 14 minutes remaining in the match. Huntington appeared to have scored a goal as his shot beat Evergreen goalkeeper Sean Oliver and ended up in the back of the net. But the ball was deemed by the officials to have come through the side of the net and not between the posts negating the would-be go-ahead goal.
With the win Evergreen moves to 4-1 on the season. Whitman drops to 1-3. The Geoducks are in action again next weekend as they host NCAA Division II Western Washington at 1:00 pm Sunday, September 18th .
