Berry Ousts Evergreen from NAIA Tournament |

April, 2005 THE OLYMPIAN OLATHE, Kan. -- The Evergreen State College's dream season ended Saturday morning when the Geoducks were beaten 4-2 by Berry College (Ga.) in the quarterfinals of the NAIA men's soccer national championships. The Geoducks, who won their first two matches at nationals, including an upset of the defending champions, finish their season 16-6-0. Berry (23-3-0), which was seeded 10th in the 20-team tournament, dominated the first half and led 3-0 at intermission. But the 18th-seeded Geoducks pulled within 3-1 on star forward Joe Gjertsen's unassisted goal at the 70-minute, 54-second mark. It was the first goal of the tournament for Gjertsen, the Cascade Conference's player of the year and Evergreen's all-time leading scorer. Less than three minutes later, though, Berry scored on a header to go up 4-1. Jeff Wruck scored Evergreen's final goal off an assist from Greg Preciado at the 78:58 mark. Tom Kneeshaw had four saves in goal for the Geoducks, who were outshot 24-12. Berry advances to Monday's semifinals and will face third-seeded Lindenwood (Mo.). In the other semifinal, No. 1 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) will play No. 4 Auburn Montgomery (Ala.). Evergreen opened the nationals with a 2-1 overtime victory against tourney host William Jewell (Mo.). The Geoducks then knocked off Rio Grande (Ohio) 2-1 in overtime, ending the defending champions' 63-match unbeaten streak. |
