Contact: Erik Snyder (360) 867-6537 October 27, 2005 OLYMPIA, Wash.—It took overtime to get it done, but the Evergreen men's soccer team defeated Warner Pacific College today to virtually assure themselves a berth in the NAIA Region I tournament. A sluggish start by the Geoducks made for a dramatic finish as Evergreen's James McDonnell won the game with a diving-header golden goal off a Jordon Saxman corner kick in the second overtime period. Evergreen dominated the match, but conceded an early goal on a Chris Price header that skipped off the wet grass, past goal minder Shawn Oliver and into the corner of the net. Trailing 1-0 in the Evergreen's Ryan Kuffler beat his defender and found Jason Bjorgo with a nice end line service. Bjorgo tucked the pass into the net from close range to level the game. Evergreen gained an advantage in the second half when the Knight's goal scorer Chris Price was shown a red card five minutes into the period for dissent. Evergreen turned the man advantage into numerous scoring chances, but had most turned away by Knight goalkeeper Brandon Mitalis. The goalkeeper recorded seventeen saves in the game, several coming in one-on-one situations. Trevor Jacka was often seen leading the charge for Evergreen and saw two shots slip just wide of goal, one off a header from a corner kick, the other on a breakaway. The junior forward recorded nine of the Geoducks' 37 shots in the game. Evergreen had a clear chance to win the match in the first over time when the Knight defense failed to step out to a dribbling Luke Arthur. The defender unleashed a shot from 25 yards that rang off the crossbar and rebounded back into play leaving the table set for McDonnell's dramatic game-winner. Evergreen sits at 12-5 for the year and finishes off the regular season Saturday against Corban College. The Warriors fell to the Geoducks 4-0 in the team's first meeting this season. The game is slated for a 1:00 start in Salem. |
