OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College men's soccer team suffered a setback today in its bid to overtake Concordia University as the top team in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Concordia and Evergreen both came into today's match undefeated in conference play-and both nearly finished the day that way as overtime was needed to determine a winner in the closely played match.

Wet conditions contributed to the 0-0 tie in regulation as the two teams had trouble generating dangerous opportunities with much of the game played between the 18-yard boxes.

Concordia nearly struck to open the second half as the Cavaliers generated two corner kicks in the first two minutes of the period. One of those corners settled into the Evergreen box setting off a goal-mouth scramble that was eventually cleared off the goal-line by the Geoduck defense.

But Evergreen was able to give the Concordia defense something to think about as they played searching balls behind the Cavalier defense to the speedy Johnathan Willoughby. Willoughby nearly hit pay-dirt twice forcing a courageous save from Cavalier goalkeeper Garrett Staples on one chance and putting a second look just over the crossbar from twelve yards off a Trevor Jacka through ball.

Evergreen had two other good chances on free kicks come up empty as James McDonnell headed a corner kick on frame but saw his shot saved off the line by a Concordia defender. McDonnell rose above the crowd a second time for a Luke Arthur feed but his header sailed over the crossbar.

Concordia fired the first salvo of the overtime period as Josh Carlson freed himself in the left corner and played a cross over the head of Evergreen goalkeeper Sean Oliver. The ball fell harmlessly to the ground and skipped out of the penalty area, but foreshadowed things to come.

With both teams content to play long balls forward the first overtime appeared to be winding down without a goal when a seemingly harmless Concordia long ball found Mirzet Sacirovic in the middle of the Evergreen defense. Sacirovic corralled the pass and played to his left to Jonathan Peru. Peru pushed the ball left again to Carlson who touched the ball behind the Evergreen defense and ripped a high shot from 12 yards over the right shoulder of Sean Oliver to end the match.

Concordia held a slight advantage in shots recording 14 to Evergreen's 12. Both teams had five corner kicks on the day.

The loss drops Evergreen to 7-2 on the year and second place in the conference race with a 3-1 record.

Concordia improves to 4-0 to lead the conference and have rebounded from a slow start to climb to 6-3-1 overall.

Evergreen next hosts Corban College on Thursday, October 6 th at 4:00 pm.
