September 3, 2004

Olympia, WA--The Evergreen State College men's soccer team opened its 2004 campaign in convincing fashion by overwhelming the Willamette University Bearcats 5-0 on the Geoduck's home field.

It was all Evergreen from the beginning of the match as the Geoducks threatened Bearcat goalkeeper Dane Meier's net early and often. The warning shot came in the sixth minute when defender Kyle Andrews pounded the crossbar from 25 yards out after the Bearcats cleared a Geoduck corner kick. Evergreen would come close again in the 13rd minute when senior forward Jason Gjertsen announced his return to Evergreen soccer after a redshirt season with a low hard shot off the near post.

The Bearcats struggled to contain the speed of Gjertsen and his brother Joe Gjertsen as the two repeatedly made forays into the Willamette defense. The two were supplied with quality balls from the Evergreen midfield as junior Gregory Preciado used excellent vision and precise passing to pick the brothers out from his left midfield role. But it was returning All-Conference midfielder who would get the first goal as he was slipped behind the Bearcats by a deft pass from Andrews and slotted a shot under Willamette's goalkeeper at 25:57.

Moments later the Gjertsen's were rewarded for a lot of hard work as Jason Gjertsen held off one Bearcat defender then dribbled around another on the right side of the field. With a decent look at goal he unselfishly picked out Joe Gjertsen who snapped a shot from 12 yards out past a helpless Meier.

Evergreen goalkeeper Tom Kneeshaw was seldom seriously tested by the Willamette attack as central defender Nick Mancaruso kept the defense organized in front of goal. The Bearcats managed five shots on goal in the game and earned three corner kicks to the Geoducks' 14 shots on goal and six corners.

In the second half Evergreen's offense continued in high gear driven by the Gjertsen brothers. Joe Gjertsen got his second goal of the game as he finish a through ball from sophomore midfielder James McDonnell. Less than three minutes Gjertsen completed a hat trick when he converted a penalty kick. Jason Gjertsen got his first goal of the season and the last of the game when he put a freekick past backup Bearcat keeper Reed Renfrow. The Geoducks move to 1-0 on the season while Willamette drops to 0-1.
