Vikings Defeat Geoducks 4-1

October 30, 2004

BELLINGHAM, Wash.-After downing eighth-ranked Simon Fraser University earlier in the week, the Evergreen men's soccer team had an off night against the Western Washington Vikings as the NCAA Division II program handed the Geoducks a 4-1 defeat.

The loss ends a three game winning streak for Evergreen and sends the Geoducks into the NAIA Region I Tournament where they will face conference rival Concordia University on a flat note.

The Vikings scored three goals before Geoduck forward Joe Gjertson struck in the 59th minute. Western Washington forward Nick Webb finished a free kick from 25 yards for the only score of the first half. But the Vikings widened the lead early in the second half when Ryan Hopp pounced on a ball bobbled by Geoduck goalkeeper Sean Oliver and jammed it into the net.

It was Webb again in the 54th minute as he one touched a cross home for the 3-0 lead.

Gjertson then chipped Viking goalkeeper Zach King four minutes later to give the Clams some hope of a comeback. But Viking Kris Pope put the game out of reach in the 64th minute when he touched a two yard shot past Oliver.

The loss drops the Geoducks to 12-6 for the regular season while the Vikings move to 12-5.
