Evergreen Men Beat the #8 Ranked Clan 1-0 in Possible Post-Season Preview |

October 26, 2004 Olympia, WA-Two of the top three teams in Region I squared off today on the campus of The Evergreen State College as the #3 ranked Geoducks played host to top-rated Simon Fraser. Both teams have qualified for post-season play and could meet again if they emerge victorious from first round action slated to begin November 5th. With nothing on the line and another meeting possibly on the horizon, both teams seemed to be holding something back in the early part of the game. Evergreen was content to concede possession to the Clan and didn't begin defending until midfield. Meanwhile, Simon Fraser played with a casualness that bordered on disinterest. Evergreen's conservative plan left the Clan struggling to find places to play forward, while Geoduck Greg Preciado sent several clever balls out of midfield to put Evergreen forwards on dangerous counter-attacks. As the first half wore on, however, Simon Fraser found some space on the right side of Evergreen's defense and earned several corner kicks that tested Geoduck goalkeeper Tom Kneeshaw. Then, the Clan's Robbie Cairns picked up a ball and freed himself from two Evergreen defenders on the top of the box only to see his shot deflected by Kneeshaw off the near post and back onto the field. Evergreen's counter-attacking paid off in the 40th minute when Joe Gjertsen won a ball for the Geoducks and sent a early pass in behind the Clan defense to Nathan Ford who beat goalkeeper Raegyn Hall from 15 yards to claim a 1-0 half time lead. Evergreen changed goalkeepers at the half with Sean Oliver replacing Tom Kneeshaw. Oliver was welcomed to the game with a flurry of chances from the Clan, including a point blank shot from leading-scorer Andrew Corrazza that deflected off the shin of a helpless Oliver. But the Geoducks weathered the storm and the Clan fell into a predictable early-cross attack that gave no trouble to Evergreen defenders. Meanwhile, the Geoducks mounted several dangerous counter attacks including a long-range shot by Kyle Andrews that was tipped off the crossbar by a full-stretched Hall. But neither team could manage a goal in the second stanza and Ford's strike proved the game-winner. With the win the Geoducks move to 12-5 on the year while the Clan drop to 10-4-1. Evergreen will next play at Division II Western Washington University on October 30th at 7:30 p.m.
