OLATHE, KS -- The Evergreen State College men’s soccer team will face host William Jewell University in the first round of the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championships on Wednesday night at 7:45 p.m. at the College Boulevard Activity Center it was announced Sunday.

Evergreen (14-6) is seeded 18th and qualified for the tournament by winning the NAIA Region I championship. Jewell (8-8-4) received an automatic bid as the host school, but also received the 15th seed.

The winner of the match between the Geoducks and Jewell will be second-seeded and undefeated Rio Grande University of Ohio (19-0-1) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Despite the automatic berth, Jewell played in the Region V tournament and fared well, defeating Liberty and Columbia before dropping the championship match 2-1 to Baker University in overtime. Blake Ryan, a senior midfielder from Kansas City, leads the Cardinal in scoring with nine goals and 11 assists while goalkeeper Michael Patton has a 0.67 goals-against average.

The Geoducks shutout both Concordia University and Warner Pacific College on their way to the Region I title. They are led offensively by Cascade Conference player-of-the-year Joe Gjertsen, Evergreen’s all-time leading scorer with 50 goals in two seasons, his brother Jason Gjertsen and their fellow senior Nate Ford.

Goalkeeper Tom Kneeshaw has also allowed less than a goal per game and recorded six shutouts this season.
