October 7, 2004 Olympia, WA -- With everything on the line, it looked like it might be a long day for the Geoducks as they hosted league leading Concordia in a match with huge bearing on both teams post-season hopes. For the first fifteen minutes of the match the Cavaliers were moving the ball well and had Evergreen disorganized and on the defensive. Concordia players were quicker to the ball, better with the ball and forced several dangerous turnovers in the Geoduck defensive end. And things appeared to go from bad to worse when an Evergreen defender brought down a Cavalier with an awkward shove in the Geoduck box. But what looked to be a problem for Evergreen turned into a positive as Robert Lossett stepped up and put the resulting penalty kick wide of the net. With the miss, the tide of the game shifted slightly. Then Evergreen midfielder Greg Preciado and scoring phenom Joe Gjertsen put momentum squarely on the Geoducks side. Just over a minute after Concordia's miss, Preciado lifted a deft ball over the Cavalier defense to pick out Gjertsen who chested down the pass then beat goalkeeper Jeremy Wells from eight yards. Then it was Gjertsen again a short 13 minutes later when he took a short cross from his brother Jason in the 28th minute and bested Wells a second time. The goal was Gjertsen's 10th in the last four games. But there was more than just Gjertsen's scoring tear to provide drama. On the day Evergreen was whistled for three penalty kicks in an apparent attempt to hand the game to Concordia. But the Cavaliers returned the favors when they were unable to convert on any of the penalties as the second was saved and the third caromed off the crossbar. Tempers also flared in the match and both teams had players ejected for fighting. In all seven cards were issued and the match was ended with 40 seconds remaining on the clock as the game degenerated into a yelling and pushing contest at midfield. Nathan Ford got the third goal for Evergreen as Preciado again provided service. Erik Fabrizius recorded a tally for the Cavaliers off a Rigoberto Rivas feed. With the win Evergreen is back in the hunt to earn a trip to the regional tournament. Still on tap are away matches at Western Baptist and Warner Pacific, and a home test against Albertson College who defeated the Geoducks in overtime earlier this season. With the win the Geoducks move to 7-4 while Concordia drops to 7-5-1. Evergreen next plays Cascade College at home this Saturday at 3:30 p.m..
