December 1, 2004 OLYMPIA, WA -- Rounding out a season of success, The Evergreen State College men's soccer team pulled in NAIA Region I honors this week. Senior forwards Joe Gjertsen and Nathan Ford garnered All-Region Team recognition with Gjertsen also being named Region I Player of the Year. Head coach Tom Boatright was named the Region I coach of the year as he guided the Geoducks to their best season on the books. Four years ago Boatright took over a program that had gone winless the previous season. After three years of sub-.500 performances, the Geoducks broke out this year with a 12-7 season that included wins over conference rival Concordia University and regional power Simon Fraser University, as well as the program's first-ever trip to the national tournament where Evergreen won two games before dropping a 4-2 decision to Berry College. Gjertsen and Ford, who completed their eligibility this season, were the top two leading scorers in the conference. Their departure will claim 37 of the 56 goals the Geoducks scored this season leaving Boatright with a big offensive problem to solve next year. Top returner for the Geoducks will be Jason Gjertsen, who led the conference in assists as he fed his brother Joe and Ford on their scoring rampage. But Gjertsen may have to convert to a goal-scorer himself to fill the shoes of the departed seniors. Also completing their eligibility are starting goalkeeper Tom Kneeshaw, key central defender Nick Mancaruso and midfielder Jeff Wruck. Greg Preciado, a second-team All-Conference midfielder will return for his senior season, as will Zephyr Titus who earned first-team All-Conference honors as a defender. Dan Jones, a second team selection will return for his junior season in the Geoduck defense. |
