Joe Gjertsen records his first hat trick as a Geoduck.

OLYMPIA, Wa - If Saturday's pre-season men's soccer match-up between conference rivals Western Baptist College and The Evergreen State College is any sort of indicator of how competitive this season will be, then 2003 looks to be a very exciting and entertaining year for men's soccer in the Cascade Conference.

On the second day of the 2nd Annual Arno Zoske Soccer Tournament, being held on the campus of Evergreen State College, the Geoducks (0-2) and the Warriors (2-0) battled into overtime before Western Baptist emerged the 5-4 victors.

Just two games into the 2003 season, the Evergreen men's soccer team has already played three overtime periods of soccer. Unfortunately they lost both contest.

Wednesday, Aug. 21, the Geoducks opened the 2003 season with double overtime loss to NAIA Region 1 ranked Westminster College, 2-1.

On Saturday, if you were a late arrival, you very easily could have missed the first four goals of the game. Less that three minutes into the second day of the 2nd Annual Arno Zocke Soccer Tournament, former Tacoma Community College and Wilson High School star Joe Gjertsen (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson H.S.) put Evergreen on the scoreboard by blasted a rebound shot, taken by former Evergreen assistant coach Matt Welling (Lacey, Wash./Timberline H.S.), now starting forward for the Geoducks, into the left back corner of the net and gave Evergreen a quick 1-0 advantage.

"Gjertsen's goal may very well have been the quickest goal Evergreen has scored since Tom (Boatright) and Andy (Hill) began coaching here," remarked Evergreen Athletic Director Dave Weber.

Eight minutes later, emerging freshman star Josh Brooks evened the score at 1-1, on a hooking corner kick that caught Evergreen's keeper Tommy Kneeshaw (Eatonville, Wash./Eatonville H.S.) by surprise. Then, in the 13th minute, Brooks scored his second goal of the game and season, to put the Warriors ahead 2-1.

Junior forward Joe Gjertsen (#10)
A shot through the crowd by Seth Burke gave Western Baptist a 3-1 lead in the 16th minute. But senior Justin Connell (Sequim, Wash./Sequim H.S.), one of only four returning starters for the Geoducks, got Evergreen back in the game, 3-2, as the 18th minute began.

Those fans that did miss portion of the first half were not disappointed in what they saw in the second ninety minutes. The second half began just like the first, starting with a penalty kick in the 54th minute by Gjertsen, to even the game at 3 each.

Western Baptist star Taurai Daka, who scored five goals the previous day against Northwest College, put the Warriors back into the lead 4-3 with his only goal of the day.

But, in the 86th minute, Gjertsen answered Daka with his third score of the day, bringing the Geoduck even with the Warriors once again and forcing the game into overtime tied 4-4.

The star of the game, the man that scored the 'Golden Goal', proved to be reserve forward Troy Kroster. Eight minutes into the additional period, Koster and Evergreen keeper Tommy Kneeshaw scrambled, from opposite directions, for an unattended ball in the center of Kneeshaw's penalty box. The ensuing collision, that sent both players to the grass, popped the ball into the air and a quickly recovering Kroster vaulted over the now injured Kneeshaw and direct the ball into an open Evergreen net, giving Western Baptist the 5-4 win.

With Sunday off, Evergreen will return to the field on Monday (Sep. 1) for the final game of the Arno Zoske tournament. The 1:00 p.m. contest against Northwest, another Cascade Conference opponent, will be played on Field 4 at Evergreen State College.
