September 23, 2003 OLYMPIA, Wa - After a season on the sideline as a redshirt freshman, followed another half season hobbled by a knee injury, freshman James McDonnel (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson H.S.) finally got a chance to play. Not at his preferred position of midfielder but in goal, as a replacement for senior Joe Erickson (Moses Lake, Wash./Moses Lake H.S.). "I don't care where coach asks me to play," McDonnel said after his first college game. "I just want to have the opportunity to contribute." Although he had only played in the box as a freshman in high school, McDonnnel's 33-minute stint in the second half as the Geoducks keeper was a success, as Evergreen (1-1-1 CCC, 3-4-1 Overall) picked up its first conference win, a convincing 11-1 victory over visiting Northwest College (0-2-0 CCC, 0-5-0 Overall). For the first time this season more than two Evergreen players put the ball into the back of the net during a game, as six different players scored. Senior transfer Chris Langford (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley H.S.) had the hot foot with three goals, a hat trick (3 or more goals), sophomore Lucas Arthur (Eatonville, Wash./Eatonville H.S.) and junior Joe Gjertsen (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson H.S.) each had two, junior transfers Tom Ardt (Olympia, Wash./North Thurson H.S.) and Nathan Ford (Steilacoom, Wash./Steilacoom H.S.) contributed a goal, as did senior Nick Valentine (Steilacoom, Wash./Steilacomm H.S.).

Prior to this contest Gjertsen had scored 12 of Evergreen's 20 goals (60%). Ford also maintained his status as Cascade Conference Assist leader, with assists to Ardt and Arthur, along with his goal. "Today we focused on Joe (Gjertsen) being a playmaker," said head coach Tom Boatright. "With Joe distributing it forced the opponents defense to focus on other players and opened Joe up for more opportunities." From the opening kick, Evergreen was the dominate team, outshooting Northwest 37 to 3. Keepers, Erickson and McDonnel, were credited with no Saves, as Northwest only Shot-on-Goal came on a successful Penalty Kick by Anthony Ricciardelli in the 64th minute. Although Geoducks rewrote the record book in the Evergreen - Northwest rivalry, today's 11 goals fell short of the record 13 goals scored against visiting Walla Walla College in 2002. Now with a conference win under their belt, Evergreen must step back into contention for the Cascade Conference championship with a victory at Albertson on Friday (Sep. 26). This road trip will only be the Geoducks second off-campus adventure so far this season. |
