September 1, 2003 Five players score seven goals against Northwest College. OLYMPIA, Wash. - One of the goals that had alluded The Evergreen State College Men's Soccer this season was achieved Monday and with style. After back-to-back overtime losses in their first two games, the Geoducks (1-2) recorded an impressive 7 - 1 win over Cascade Conference rival Northwest (0-2). For the second straight game, Tacoma native Joe Gjertsen (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson H.S.) put Evergreen on the scoreboard first and followed it with a hat trick (three goals in a game). In Saturday's overtime loss to Western Baptist, Gjertsen got his first hat trick at Evergreen accompanied by his first assist. Three games into the 2003 season he already rung up 7 goals. Throughout the majority of the ninety-minute game the Geoducks kept the ball in Eagles end of the field. Thirty-one shot by Evergreen, sixteen on-goal, kept Northwest's defense and goalkeeper J.J. Geise busy. "As the tournament progressed it was obvious to see that we are very tough up front," said coach Tom Boatright, beginning his third season at Evergreen. "We may very well have the best group of forward in the conference. Time will tell." Two of the remaining four goals came from Evergreen starters Nick Mancaruso (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes H.S.) and Justin Connell (Sequim, Wash./Sequim H.S.)
