September 10, 2003 OLYMPIA, Wa - Rarely do the exploits of a single player solely determine the outcome of a soccer game. It takes the combined effort of all eleven players on the field to create the situations that enable a team to put the ball into the net more times than their opponents.
Eatonville native Tom Kneeshaw (junior / goalkeeper)
Such was the case for the Evergreen Men's Soccer team during week two of the 2003 season. Against Cascade Conference rival Northwest, Monday, Sep. 1, junior goalkeeper Tom Kneeshaw (Eatonville, Wash./Eatonville H.S.) directed Evergreen's defense in a virtually flawless performance. The visiting Eagles managed to put only one ball into the net, on the last second of the game, after Kneeshaw had been replace. Five days later, Saturday, Sep 6., the Geoducks defense did a masterful job preventing NCAA Div. III George Fox from scoring and Kneeshaw was credited with his first shutout of the season. Having started for the last three year seasons, Kneeshaw currently hold the records for 'Most Saves (Game)' - 19, 'Most Saves (Season)' - 161, 'Most Saves (Career) - 276, 'Most Shutouts (Season)' - 3, 'Most Shutouts (Career)' - 5.5. "Tommy is a much more effective player today than when we recruited him out of high school," said Evergreen coach Andy Hill, in his 3rd season at Evergreen. "He is becoming a very effective leader in the backfield."
Tacoma native Joe Gjertesn (junior / forward)
On the other end of the field Puget Sound native Joe Gjertsen (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson H.S.) and the Evergreen offense were creating havoc for week two opponents. In 180 minutes of soccer, two games, the Geoducks scored thirteen total goals. Northwest goalkeeper J.J. Geise surrendered 7, in Evergreen's 7-1 victory, and George Fox keeper Bryce Warren was not able to stop six Evergreen shot, in the 6-0 shutout. The nine assists, that setup the thirteen goals, came from five different Evergreen players. As was the case in Evergreen's first two games of the season, Gjertsen scored the games first goal in both games. Against Northwest, he followed his initial strike with two more goals, before head coach Tom Boatright substituted for him. George Fox, on the other hands, wished that Boatright had replaced Gjertsen in the first half. By half-time he had his third consecutive hat trick (3 or more goals) and following the intermission break with a fourth, which tied the Evergreen Men's Soccer record for 'Most Goals in a Game', and a fifth goals on a corner kick in the 81st minute. The previous record, of 4 goals, had stood for a decade, set by John Hall in 1992. "Joe is one of the most amazing forwards I have ever seen or played with, at all levels," Kneeshaw stated with enthusiasm. "He has made me a better player, having to go against him in practice." |
