September 6, 2003 Joe Gjertsen sets new scoring record with 5 goals. OLYMPIA, Wa - Fresh off a pre-season 7-1 victory over Cascade Conference rival Northwest College on Monday, Evergreen Men's Soccer team showed on Saturday that they have a potent offense this season, shutting out NCAA Division III George Fox Bruins (0-0, 1-2) 6-0 on Saturday. Looking to avenge last years 1-0 loss, the Geoducks (0-0, 2-2) had to look no further than junior college transfer Joe Gjertsen (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson H.S.). Gjertsen scored a record 5 goals, breaking the old record of 4 goals, set by John Hall in 1992. The other goal for Evergreen came from Pierce County native Nathan Ford (Steilacoom, Wash./Steilacoom H.S.). In only the fourth game of the 2003 season, Gjertsen has already recorded three consecutive Hat Trick's, three or more goals in a single game. Last season, the most productive for Evergreen Men's Soccer in the last seven years, only one player recorded the magical Hat Trick, that coming from freshman forward Jake Taylor (Cali, Colombia/Peninsula H.S.). Saturday was also a career day for Ford, at least from the college standpoint. His three assists, all to Gjertsen, put him in the #2 spot for singe game assists, second only to Gjertsen's older brother Jason, whose 4 assists last season for Evergreen, against Walla Walla, put him in the NAIA record book. Senior Chris Langford (Antioch, Cali./Deer Valley H.S.) got his second assist of the season off Gjertsen's first goal of the game. "No doubt, the teams are doing the math," said co-head coach Andy Hill, who shares the sideline for the third consecutive year with Tom Boatright. "They can focus on Joe all they want but we are much more than a one man show. Our shot percentage today and Nat's three assists proves that." Although Gjertsen was the one putting the ball into the net, the entire Geoducks offense was on fire, shooting a sizzling 65 percent (13 of 20). With just three wins, nine losses and three ties against the non-conference Bruins, Evergreen's commanding 6-0 win today reversed its previous seven-game losing streak, in a rivalry that dates back to 1986.
Former South Sound Player of the Year, Joe Gjertsen, raised the bar for Evergreen Men's Soccer with a record 5 goals against George Fox.
For the fourth consecutive game Gjertsen scored the opening goals, this one coming at the 18:30 mark of the first half. Barely two minutes later he struck again, then assured himself yet another Hat Trick with his third goal at exactly 43:43 in the first half. Gjertsen's record tying goal, the fourth, and record setting goal, the fifth, were the his most dramatic of the game, coming virtually 7 minutes apart, at 75:48 and 81:02. Having received a pass from Ford, Gjertsen drove the right side of the net, then left George Fox goalkeeper Bryce Warren sitting on the ground with a crossover dribble to his left foot. One additional step allowed him to effortlessly tap the ball into the now wide open net for this fourth score. He fifth goal came unassisted, on an untouched curving corner kick from the left side. With the win, the Geoducks evened their season record at 2 wins and 2 losses, giving third-year goalkeeper Tom Kneeshaw (Eatonville, Wash./Eatonville H.S.) his first shutout of the young season. "Moving (Chris) Mancaruso from midfield to the back line, with (Shawn) O'Neill and (Luke) Arthur, gave us more experience and defensive leadership in the back," Hill explained. "At the moment our defense is not were Tom and I would like it." Evergreen's defense will be tested on Tuesday, Sep. 15, when the Geoducks travel to Western Washington University to play the Vikings. Last years contested between the two teams ended 7-0 in favor of Western. |
