October 4, 2003 OLYMPIA, Wash. - Today, The Evergreen State College Men's Soccer team extended one of their longest winning streaks with another victory, by shutting out Cascade College 8-0. The loss was the Thunderbirds' (0-5-1 CCC, 0-8-1 Overall) eighth and worst defeat of the 2003 season. Forward Joe Gjertsen (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson H.S.) got the action going quickly for Evergreen (3-2-1 CCC, 5-5-1 Overall) with the first goal 59 seconds into the contest. Two minutes later, Gjertsen recorded his second goal. Thirty-seven minutes after that, he put himself into the Men's Soccer record book once again by recording his fourth Hat Trick (3 or more goals) of the season. A month ago, Gjertsen's fourth goal of the game, which came nine minutes into the second half, would have tied the record for the 'Most Goals in a Season', set by John Hall in 1992. But on Sept. 6, against George Fox, Gjertsen established a new benchmark, scoring five goals in a single game. So, his four unassisted goals today will only be remembered as the second best scoring performance in Evergreen Men's Soccer history. From a team perspective, three things were accomplished today; Evergreen once again this season became a playoff contender, the Geoducks found their #2 scorer on the team, and, they established a new season record for the 'Most Corner Kicks' in a game. The corner kicks record was probably the least significant accomplishment of the day. Today's victory and Thursday's win over Concordia, 3-1, moved Evergreen into a fourth place tie in the Cascade Conference standings with Western Baptist. Significant, because only the top four teams advance to post season play. The loss was Concordia's first conference defeat this year season and put Evergreen one game behind Albertson and Warner Pacific, who are currently tied for 2nd, and the Cavaliers, who lead the conference.
Junior Nathan Ford, one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Nathan Ford's (Steilacoom, Wash./.Steilacoom H.S.) fifth goal, in the 47th minute, and sixth of the season, delivered thirteen minutes into the second half, separated him from the pack and made him Evergreen's #2 scorer. Like Gjertsen, Ford has been moved into a midfield position in Coach Tom Boatright's new triangle offense. Also like Gjertsen, the new position farther away from the goal has not diminished his scoring ability. Conference wise, Ford is listed 7th on the 'Goals Scored' breakdown and 2nd on the Assist list. But do not forget about senior Chris Langford (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley H.S.). Langford's goal, in the 62nd minute, against his former team, pushed his season total to five, equally his season output last year at Cascade. Langford also produced the most memorable moment in the game, by banging the hardest shot in Evergreen Men's Soccer history, off the outside the right goal post, that left his teammates and coaches on the sideline in stitches. With the second half of Cascade Conference play set to begin this coming Thursday (Oct. 9) Evergreen have recovered from their 1-2-1 start. The tough part is that only one of their six remaining games are at home. Thursday they will travel to Portland, Ore. to play Warner Pacific, who beat them 1-0 Sep. 18. Next Saturday the Geoducks will play Western Baptist in Salem, Ore. Evergreen and the Warriors have already played twice this season, with both games going into overtime. |
