October 29, 2002 by Western Washington Sports Information Weinberg has three assists and one goal for Western, ranked No.6 in West Region. BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Ian Weinberg (Sr., Seattle/Garfield) had a goal and three assists as Western Washington University continued its offensive explosion, defeating The Evergreen State College, 7-0, in a non-league men's soccer game Tuesday at Civic Stadium. Western, ranked No.6 in the NCAA Division II West Region ratings, improved to 12-4-1, and has 10 wins and a tie in its last 12 games. The Vikings, who had never in school history scored six or more goals in consecutive games prior to last week, have now done so three straight times, pouring in 20 goals in those contests. Evergreen fell to 8-11-0. Weinberg fed Eric Blatt (Sr., Spokane/Ferris) and Paul Nissley (So., Mount Vernon) for first-half goals, then scored himself five minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Kory Pope (Fr., Everett/Jackson) and splitting three defenders before scoring from five yards out. Weinberg capped his night in the 63rd minute, feeding Nissley for a tap-in to make the score 4-0. Nissley's two goals give him seven in the last three games and 13 for the season, with the latter mark being the fourth best in school history. His 17 career goals are fifth in Western history. "I talked to Paul before the game about keeping his intensity up, because sometimes when you're on a roll you can let down," said Western coach Travis Connell. "He brought the intensity again tonight. He's been the catalyst and everyone else has jumped on board. There isn't anything different about what we're doing. We're still a blue-collar team that works hard, goes faster to loose balls and is willing to sacrifice ourselves in the penalty area, it's just finally turning into goals." Gus Zadra (Fr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) had two of Western's last three goals, scoring on an assist from Sean McCormick (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) in the 80th minute, then heading in a cross from Jeremy Milsten (So., Puyallup/Rogers) with just 2:20 to go. In between, Ian McLeod (So., Mercer Island) scored with an assist from Wes To (Fr., Snohomish). The Vikings had a 27-5 edge in shots, with goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (Fr., Monroe) making just one save in earning his sixth shutout. The Geoducks' best chance came in the 74th minute, when Lucas Arthur (Eatonville/Eatonvill H.S.) hit the crossbar with a shot from the top of the penalty area. Western, which is 8-1-1 at home, hits the road to face NAIA No.9-ranked Simon Fraser on Saturday (7:30 p.m.). |
